Dominion Clinic is a preventive medical clinic focusing especially on the early diagnosis and prevention of heart disease. We carry out Executive Health evaluations, exercise tolerance tests on referral from GPs and for Civil Aviation, as well as lung function tests and audiometry.
The first (and primary) responsibility of the Exercise Physiologist is to carry out any Exercise Tolerance Tests required (with monitoring of full 12-lead ECG and blood pressure). Associated with this aspect of the role, is the requirement to read and interpret the ECG tracings recorded before, during and after exercise.
Another key responsibility is to review each clients results with them at the end of their assessment. This review session entails providing encouragement and motivation in important areas of lifestyle modification commonly including weight loss, nutritional or dietary change, exercise habits, stress management and smoking cessation. There is also an educational component where the clients ECG tracings, blood test results, lung function test results and medical examination findings are reported and explained.
The third important area of responsibility is to complete the required written reports after the assessment has been completed. Usually such reports will go to the client as well as to the referring doctor.
Other responsibilities may include :-
Measuring height, weight and skinfold thicknesses to estimate body-fat content.
Carrying out spirometric lung function tests.
Completing an audiogram and vision tests.
Recording a resting electrocardiogram (ECG) and carrying out the skin preparation and electrode placement for the subsequent exercise tolerance test.
As with the overall review session, with most of the above testing there is plenty of scope for the physiologist to explain and interpret the results to the client.
Administrative tasks will involve making bookings for clients either by phone or email and generally maintaining control over the appointment schedule. Where the specific assessment requires, the client may need a medical history questionnaire or blood test request form sent out prior to their assessment. Frequently at the end of their assessment clients will need reports for themselves and /or their GP completed. Talking to prospective clients who ring up to enquire about our assessments and explaining to them what we do and why we do it, will sometimes be required.
Other administrative tasks may involve sending out invoices after assessments have been completed, ordering supplies and consumables required by the clinic or paying bills owed by the clinic.
Dominion Clinic employs 3 doctors who carry out the medical examinations that are an integral part of our assessments. Thus, liaising with our doctors and coordinating their timetables becomes nearly as important as interacting with the clients.
The hours of work are 8:30am – 5:00pm Monday to Friday, or else 8:00am – 4:30pm depending on client bookings.
The work is varied and interesting and would suit someone who enjoys working with people and relates well to a wide range of stimulating personalities. There is a strong educative role to our assessments and explaining the results in simple lay language will be an important part of your role. Equally, where required, providing ongoing training and assistance to help a new appointee to be the best that they can be, is a vital part of our role.
