“It takes all sorts of people to care for teens – you may be surprised that youre just the right person.”
Child, Youth and Family is the biggest care agency in New Zealand. We care for children and young people keeping them safe from neglect or abuse, or because their behaviour cant be managed by their parents.
Where possible we work with families so that young people can either stay at home or live with their extended family, safely. Sometimes this means coming into care for short periods of time while we work with the family during this time the young person needs someone like you, who can provide day-to-day care and support.
Right now we are looking for foster carers who can open their homes in particular, to challenging teens and stick with them if things get tough.
Foster parents say that through the challenges, seeing the children in their care grow and thrive is their greatest reward, and enriches their lives.
Youll make a great foster carer for teens if you:
-
Can deal with the challenges of those who have been affected by abuse or neglect.
-
Have a non judgemental, engaging style of parenting.
-
Can build trust quickly and easily with them.
-
Have an understanding of different backgrounds, culture and the impact of social problems.
-
Can offer your care for as long as they need it, but are able to let go when its time for them to return home.
Child Youth and Family will provide you with professional practical and emotional support, and training on how to deal with the impact of abuse and neglect, grief, loss and separation.
All our foster carers are trained and approved; the application process usually takes about three months to conduct all checks and interviews.
Please note that foster caring is not a paid position. However you will receive a standard fortnightly board allowance to cover the expenses for the day-to-day care of the child and additional payment for clothing, medical and education costs.
You will need to be a New Zealand citizen or resident to apply to become a caregiver.
