This is an exciting time for the new Unitary Council and the Resource Consents department has a critical role to play.
This role will expose you to a variety of work within an established team already boasting a high level of technical expertise. You will be capable of working in a self-reliant manner and determine the direction of hearings, appeals and objections under your control. Based in Manukau, your work flows from the diverse urban and rural communities across the southern part of the region. This offers a complex, challenging and diverse caseload.
Your leadership and organisational skills in mentoring staff and ensuring a seamless co-ordination with consenting teams will assist in promoting quality customer service. This is a unique opportunity to make a visible difference to the natural and built environment.
This is not a consent processing role, however, your experience in consenting processes, applied knowledge of the RMA, good communication skills and strong customer focus is required.More specifically, the role requires that you have ability and a real interest in the following areas:
- Utilising mediation and negotiation skills to resolve matters under the RMA
- Case management of appeals to the Environment Court and objections under the RMA
- Analysing case law and providing feedback on their impact on resource consent processing and decision-making
- Providing technical overview and support to the processing teams and independent commissioners for council hearings
- Promoting best practice and establishing a consistent approach to consent processing and hearings with a drive for excellent customer service
- Engaging with internal and external providers to achieve outcomes in a timely manner

To be successful in this role, you will have:
- A tertiary qualification in planning
- A minimum of six years’ experience in local government
- Eligibility for full membership of the New Zealand Planning Institute
